True or False. Oakland County supports Cobo Hall.
True. Since 1986 more than $375 million in hotel and liquor taxes have been collected from the Detroit/Tri-County area and sent to Cobo Hall. Most of this money, $279 million, came from hotel taxes. Of the 4, Oakland County taxpayers are the largest single contributor to that levy. Through September 30, 2006, more than $70 million in liquor taxes were collected in Oakland County; $36 million of those taxes were sent to Michigan's other counties to "reward" them for voting in 1986 to impose the Convention Facility Tax.
True or False. Only Wayne County has presented a funding plan to remodel and expand Cobo Hall.
False. Since 2004, Oakland County has proposed 5 alternative plans for funding a revamped Cobo Hall, all of which have been met with silence. (See 2007 State of the County Address, page 7, for example.)
True or False. Everyone "supports" a remodeled and expanded Cobo Hall.
False. True "support," meaning willingness to pay, is sorely lacking. No domestic or foreign automobile manufacturer, no Tier 1, 2 or 3 supplier, no casino and no city, village, township or county outside of Wayne, Oakland or Macomb has indicated a willingness to financially pay for a Cobo Hall project.
Incredibly, Cobo proponents have not secured a commitment from the domestic auto companies to use Cobo Hall as the site of the North American International Auto Show for the life of any bonds issued to pay for a new facility. If the anchor tenants won't commit, why should taxpayers risk hundreds of millions of dollars needed elsewhere?
