Think that the zoo closes each winter just because it's cold outside? Guess again! Many of the animals such as snow monkeys, tigers, wolverines, elk, camels, and polar bears are more active in the cold than in the warmer seasons.
Some warm indoor attractions include the Arctic Ring of Life which gets you up close with polar bears and seals and for those who prefer a more tropical setting the Butterfly Garden offers a peaceful spot to thaw out.
The Detroit Zoo's Wild Winter Weekends will take place from 11 AM to 3PM and features a different theme each month which will include games, crafts, music and zookeeper talks.
January 8 & 9, 2011 Wild Winter Inuit Adventure - View ice carving demonstrations, zookeeper talks, live performances and more.
February 12 & 13, 2011 Wild Winter African Adventure - In celebration of Black History Month enjoy live entertainment, including a African drum lesson, arts, crafts and games.
March 12 & 13, 2011 Wild Winter Safari Social - Enjoy hot chocolate and ice cream, zookeeper talks, arts, crafts, and a scavenger hunt.
